Flying Drones Near Airports in Sri Lanka

A drone near approach or departure paths is a direct hazard to manned aviation, and an occurrence affecting a manned aircraft triggers mandatory reporting to the police and CAASL. Sri Lanka's airspace around airports is therefore among the clearest restrictions in the rulebook: published guidance simply says not to fly in the proximity of airports and helipads, and secondary sources consistently describe controlled airspace around airports as requiring prior ATC authorisation.

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake shapes the airspace around Negombo and the western coastal strip north of Colombo. Ratmalana Airport sits inside the Colombo metropolitan area, and Sri Lanka Air Force bases add further restricted locations around the country. Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport affects the Hambantota region in the south, and Jaffna International Airport at Palaly affects the northern peninsula. Domestic airfields and water aerodromes used by air taxi services add smaller zones, including near tourist areas.

The practical consequence: several popular tourist regions, including Negombo and parts of Colombo, sit closer to active aviation than visitors expect. Check the official map rather than judging by eye.

Locate the nearest airports and helipads to any planned site, check the zone classification on the CAASL Drone Zone Map, and if your operation genuinely needs to occur near controlled airspace, raise it explicitly in the approval process so ATC coordination can be addressed by the authority. Never launch near an airport on the theory that a small drone is harmless; it is precisely the scenario the rules exist to prevent.
